Flow with Your Emotions

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase ‘sit with your emotions’ or simply ‘sit with it’. It’s become a common expression, especially in the well-being space. I’ve used it many times myself, and it makes sense — to me and to many clients. ‘Sit with it’ conveys the idea that in order to heal, we need to feel and process our emotions rather than run away from them.

We all need this gentle reminder from time to time — therapists included! It’s a core part of the work I do with clients and of my own daily healing practice. Society has not taught us how to process our emotions; in fact, it often conditions us to actively avoid them. We’ve been brought up to believe that emotions such as sadness and anger are ‘bad’, while emotions such as happiness and joy are ‘good’.
Not only is this an oversimplified view of emotions, but some would argue it contributes to many of the issues we face in modern life. You could say that a vast number of health issues today — whether they appear as physical or mental symptoms — have, at their root, an emotional or energetic imbalance. From chronic health issues that mystify the GP, to feelings of depression or anxiety... could these all be energetic in nature?
To begin to understand this, we may need to reframe the way we view the human body — and perhaps, to truly heal, the way we view life itself.

Modern physics presents a fundamentally different view of reality compared to classical physics. Classical physics, which emerged in the 1800s, is matter-centred — it sees atoms and molecules as fixed bits of matter. Modern medicine is still largely based on these principles, which certainly tell part of the story (many lives are saved by it every day).
Modern physics, by contrast, is energy-centred — seeing atoms and molecules as dynamic patterns of energy. What’s more, this field is providing growing evidence that non-physical influences, such as emotions, can have a powerful impact on the body. This is a huge, still unfolding area of understanding — from chronic health issues with no clear cause to miraculous healing that medicine cannot explain. 1)
So how does this relate to ‘sitting with our emotions’? Well — if our system (mind, body, and soul) is, in fact, an ever-changing field of vibrating energy, then perhaps ‘sitting with’ emotions doesn’t quite capture the incredible capacity of the body. I would argue that we would do better to think of it as ‘flowing with’ emotions, rather than sitting with them.
Energy needs to move through us — to be processed and released — for the mind-body system to function as it is meant to: in a state of optimum balance. Imbalances are inevitable — life happens and we respond. But those imbalances don’t have to get stuck in our system, as they so often do. They can flow — like water, that moves towards the ocean and evaporates from the body into the air.

When we tense up, deny ourselves the chance to feel, or label an emotion as ‘wrong’, we are not simply ‘keeping calm and carrying on’ (as many ancestors believed). We are actually preventing the body’s natural healing state, creating resistance. And what does resistance do? It causes stress and tells the body it is not safe — leading to chronic nervous system dysregulation and states like fight, flight, or shutdown. This is the crux of many chronic health symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, exhaustion and burnout, where the system has been too strained for too long.
Of course, there are times in life when we must cope and survive — and there is no shame in this. These survival states can be life-saving. But for many of us, they have become our default. I speak from experience here. And so, I want to remind us all that there is a better way — one that requires us to reframe how we see emotions, and even how we see the wider universe. I think in our hearts, we already know this.
So next time you feel something in your body — a tension, niggle, nervousness, tightness, or anything else — do yourself a kindness: don’t just sit with it... flow with it. I will try to do the same. Allow this sensation — this energy and emotion — to have space to move within you. Creating this inner space is key, and the body holds the key. But how can you do this?
Healing can be simple — though simple does not make it easy! We are, after all, undoing centuries of conditioning and learning how to be in our bodies in a new way. (Oh, just a small thing then!?) The invitation is to STOP and pause as often as you can throughout your day. Sink your awareness into your body. Notice what you feel — without judgement. Remember: it’s just energy. When we shed the scary labels we give emotions, they begin to feel more neutral and natural.
Next, take some slow, deep breaths and soften the body. Let go of any tension and allow flow. You’ve likely felt this before — but when you know the depth of healing this allows, you will find yourself doing it more and more! Please do — for yourself, and for the world. The more we heal, the more the world heals alongside us.
We are not fixed, change is possible, and healing is our natural state.
I have witnessed clients release energy they had been carrying for years — sometimes decades. Often, when we begin exploring these tools, clients say, “But I’ve already dealt with this. I’ve talked it through so many times in therapy... surely it’s done by now?”
That’s where this approach is different. By combining mind and body — and by recognising the human system as a flowing field of energy — we can access deeper and often faster shifts. In many ways, this is supported by what modern physics is beginning to reveal: that we are not simply solid matter, but dynamic energy in constant movement.
For example, through EFT we help release blocks within this energy system and work with the spaciousness that arises — inviting new patterns, insights, and healing to emerge. We are no longer just thinking about our challenges — we are clearing them from the system itself.
So — on this seemingly ordinary day, as you take a moment to read this — perhaps this is no ordinary day after all. Perhaps it marks the beginning of a new way of being, unlocking new levels of health and vitality in your life. And the beauty is, it doesn’t require huge effort. Just a small opening, a softening of only a few percent, can begin to shift everything.
You are the change — and it all lives within your energy system.
Are you ready to flow with your emotions this summer? Me too!
If you’d like support on this journey, I’ve created a unique Soul Space approach focused on helping you become your own healer. Together we will explore deep healing tools — hypnosis, EFT, coaching, Qigong — and create your personal healing toolkit. I have a few spaces open for this summer, and I would love to hear from you if you’re ready to begin this work.

Trauma aware — Please note that if you are living with more complex emotions related to trauma, I would recommend working with a qualified professional. There are times in life when it is not appropriate to force ourselves to feel emotions on our own. With the right support, gentle healing is absolutely possible.
